Does my new band really have to be 'run in'?

Yes it does ! Most bands are accurately heat treated and have an extremely sharp cutting edge and if you want to keep it that way for the longest time possible then it needs running in. To do this reduce the feed pressure by about one third of normal for the first 500square cm of cutting.
